Sparring and strength

Last night at training…
To say that I got beasted would be a massive understatement. I felt really good in the gym, surprisingly because I was only there twice last week and before that I had a couple of weeks off. I am in the process of writing all the content for the new site so that was my initial week off, getting the foundations laid for the new site… the second week off was due to my wife being ill. I needed to play the superhero and save her. 

Last week was a good couple of sessions, I was in on Monday and Thursday the two strength and conditioning days. I do like to try and get down for the strength and conditioning classes because I do like to lift weight and push myself that way rather than skipping that session and coming down just for Thai… Plus I finish work at 5 and by the time I have walked down to the gym it is time for the strength class to start. 

I was so sore last week and tired too! I was struggling to keep my breath as I hadn’t done anything in terms of fitness while I had been away from the gym in the previous two weeks. Lo and behold, in typical Dom fashion, I pushed myself too far too fast and was totally exhausted! It was a nasty fitness combo on the pads and I was ready to drop man!

This week has been much better, I have only done one session so far but last night was awesome! It was the sort of session where it relights the fire in you to begin to push yourself again. Its funny when you slip out of the routine of training it quickly becomes something that you begin to push to the back of your mind but then when you manage to pull your finger out of your arse and get back to the gym you begin to think to yourself “why was I off?!?”

Last night in strength and conditioning we worked on technique. Craig said that going forward once he gets back from Thailand he will be making a program to begin getting our one-rep max on each of the lift, which, to be honest, I am quite looking forward to because I have never actually managed to track my personal bests not to the point where I could actually manage it and try to better in week in week out. So that will be in the coming months which is good.

The actual session itself was going to be working on, dead lift, push-press, bench-press, back-squat, front-squat, the clean and possibly a couple more but I just can’t think of then right now. We only managed to get through bench, push, front and back squat, we still have to do dead lift and clean of which we will probably do on Thursday. It was a steady strength class go really as far as they go, we still had a workout from it but I wasn’t totally gassed which I guess set me up for the class after that. 

After the strength class we had a wicked Thai session, this is where the blog post really begins! I got to do the session with Craig as my partner which is always an experience. To begin with we worked on defending attacks and standing your ground. Something that with my weight, I have quite the advantage. We worked on a single shot at first, so one would defend, the other attack and it would be one for one. It would usually start off quite slow but then end up being really fast. I felt so fluid last night and it almost felt natural. When we began to link three shots Craig told me something.

I went to throw a combination and I stumbled and Craig gave me a good tip and it was “try not to plan what you are going to do. Try and see your next shot then take that.” Which makes perfect sense if you think about it. If I plan a one, two, hook but he would move back and then my right hand barely reaches and my hook would just miss completely. Whereas if I were to use the formula that Craig gave me, maybe I would do the right hand but do a leg kick instead and walk it in to then follow that up with a hook or something. 

I always try to take at least one thing away from every session I do and that will definitely be what I take away and use going forward. After the technical aspect of the session it was on to sparring. With me being paired up with Craig, naturally got to do a round with him which is always awesome! I accidentally cracked him in the knackers. I mean, it was a drain of the face and knocks you for sick sort of impact. He was out for the rest of that round and when it came to change, I thought I had got away with the punishment but when he said “everyone find a new partner… No… Not you!” I shit my pants a little bit. 

This round was an awesome round. Albeit tough, I had to think about everything. My movements, what Craig was doing, keeping my posture, relaxing and striking. After my round with Craig I swapped between a few of the people within the session but I was so tired by the end of it. I took a knee to the stomach off Craig and then a couple of the people from the group teeped me in exactly the same place and my stomach was totally knackered by the end. 

At the end of the session we worked on core strength. Core strength. Sit ups, crunches, leg raises, plank, side plank. Yes, I looked like I was having some sort of seizure. After the first couple exercises my core was totally shot but I had to push, I had to dig deep and make sure that I did as much as I could and then push a little further!! 

I was sore when I woke up this morning but being sore is the sign of a damn good session and a kind of session I look forward to doing more of in the future!! 

In other news, I am in the process of creating PunchLine Fights. A place where all combat sports will come together and thrive. MTBUK will still be around and I will still be blogging and documenting my experiences in Muay Thai. It may only be once or twice a month but there is a lot going on behind closed doors with PLF and I hope to begin putting the content out for you all!

The calm before the storm

Mondays session was canny. I got two hours in. One hour strength and conditioning and one hour Thai/K1. There were quite a few of us in the classes. I think with it being the beginning of the year people are wanting to get fit and lose the weight that they potentially put on over Christmas or want to make a change and generally get fit.

Because there were so many people in the class it was difficult to get everyone around the circuits that Craig had planned so he had to improvise to get us to be able to do it. To begin with we started with the usual warm up. Foam rolling to ease out the aches and pains of the day before, wall squats, roll over v-sits and spinal floss’s.

For the actual exercises we were doing 3x goblet squats with a weight that was suitable for you, which for me and Martin was a hefty 45kg, after that we had to do 5 jumping Squats followed by 5 weighted jumping squats and let me tell you, it wasn’t just a chain around the neck or even the 45kg dumbbell it was the other person on our backs.

I felt so sorry for Martin, he is a bit lighter than what I am, he is about 75kg and I am still at about 95kg!! Poor guy! So we had to do 5 weight squat jumps and then 5 assisted squat jumps where we helped our partners jump as high as possible. We had to do that three times round. The next one. The struggle.

This is all to work on our explosive power because it was slow down on the squat and high intensity on the rise to be able to make he jump or in the next exercise it was press ups. Slow on the way down but then explosive on the way up and you had to raise your hands to your shoulders. I didn’t do too well on this one. I struggled with it. 5 explosive press-ups, 5 resisted press-ups and 5 assisted press-ups.I struggle with upper body exercises, I don’t know why, probably because I haven’t ever done anything really strenuous on my top half like weight lifting or anything like that.

After we did that, we did a bit of fun stuff, we worked on head stands and hand stands to help us be able to engage our core and make it support us. Funnily enough, that sort of stuff I am quite good at, I enjoy that sort of stuff. Not that I could actually do it because I had totally lost all my strength in my arms because of the previous exercises! I did try and do them, hold them for as long as I could. If I was fresh I would have been able to do it no problem. I also got the opportunity to showcase my one handed cartwheel! We got talking about the Matrix being on the night before and how much a loved the scene where Neo does the one handed cartwheel and that I taught myself how to do one when I was younger purely because of that scene.

After that the Thai class started. It was a good session, albeit really busy, we could barely move for people being there, I love it!! Mondays are by far, my favourite class of the week. We worked on our boxing and footwork this week. We were partnered up and given ‘lanes’  on the mats. We worked on moving forward with boxing, jab, cross, faking the jab cross, then putting a kick or knee on the end of it depending on how far away your partner had moved.

Making sure while doing these drills we were keeping our footwork clean and well thought about. When we stepped forward we would have to make sure that both of our feet moved and we were able to keep ourselves centered.

After that it was fitness for one side of the class and sparring for the other side of the class. A month or two ago I would have probably been in the side of the class that did fitness but I wasn’t! I got to do some sparring. It was still a bit squashed in the ring but it was awesome. I love being able to push myself to my limits and sparring makes me able to do that. After the first round I am tired but I still have to engage my brain to think about what it is I am doing, where my feet are, what my hands are doing. Calculating what my options are and acting on them. We got four rounds in, I did two with Liam, one with titler and one with ruairi. It was class!

I have decided to take the rest of the week off training in preparation for this weekend. It is the interclub coming up in Leeds and I wanted to rest my shins and foot. Both of which if I train my normal 4/5 days a week I am in quite a lot of pain by the end of the week. So I have been resting this week. I am looking forward to this weekend. I feel as though I have improved quite a lot since my last interclub, it will be good to see what the other people from other clubs are doing too. It seems to be quite a big one, there are competitive and non-competitive bouts on Saturday so it will be good to see some showcased talents around the area.

I will be videoing some fights, getting some pictures and stuff so I will be posting a blog about it when it is over. I know I have touched upon this in my previous post but it still stands. I am in the process of building a new site, it is taking longer than I had anticipated. Getting all the writing done and all of the site designed as well as other things sorted too.

Time is all I need, time and effort. As is mentioned in Shawshank redemption, which for the record is an awesome film, you have to either get busy living or get busy dying. I am living! I can’t imagine my life being any different at the minute! It feels great!

Finally beginning to feel a difference!

I am really beginning to feel a progression in my training. I am getting to the point now where I feel comfortable with the basics of Muay Thai.

The stance, the teep, body kicks, leg kicks and my boxing are all areas I am beginning to a bit more feel confident. The hardest thing for me at the minute is thinking about what I am doing, keeping my composure and not flapping.

Calculating my movements, concentrating on my footwork, making sure the strikes I use are accurate and precise. This is something that I got told will come with time. Tom said something that I believe rings true but can’t happen.

I was talking to him about the sparring that we had been doing, he was doing awesome, with it being a K1 class we were working on combinations, Craig wasn’t fussed what combinations they were as long as they were over three strikes. We were in our partners going one for one but fast, as soon as one combo was finished the partner was getting their strikes in.

It was awesome! This is what has triggered me thinking about the precision and how important it is. After the class had finished we (me and tom)  were talking about the session and how he felt. He is quite critical of himself. I told him he needs to believe in himself more, he has talent, of which, with time will only get better and better. I had said something kind of like that, it takes time or something and he said in reply, but we all want it to happen overnight.

In some cases we do, it would be awesome if we could all become champions off one days training but then would that take away what it takes to get wherever it is you are wanting to go or do? The heart ache, the pain, the sheer punishment it takes to power through those horrific training sessions. That is what I love about Muay Thai.

You have to push yourself further than you ever thought you could. Be a person that goes beyond what you think your body is capable of. Finding something deep inside you to push yourself that extra bit further! I love it! I have thought about this a lot recently. How now I am training in Muay Thai, it influences my day to day choices. How I want to better myself and get to reach that goal whatever it may be!

I’m on a bit of a deep train of thought here, kind of getting carried away with my thinking but it’s true. How finding something that means a lot to you, family, friends or a hobby, how it adds value to everything else!

Today we got to punch each other in the face!

Tonight training session was awesome! The first time in quite a long time where we managed to get a decent amount of sparring in! Before I divulge into tonights class I have a few things to brush over first.

I am going to be logging my meals so I know what I have been eating throughout my competition that I am having within the gym.

Breakfast wasn’t fantastic, while I was at home I had my morning green shake which had avocado, banana, Apple, cucumber, kale, spinach, watercress, a squeezed orange and a kiwi, it was probably one of the nicest ones I have made to date! I was running late for work so didn’t manage to get breakfast while at home, I picked up a breakfast wrap in sainsburys (I know, I know! Horrifically unhealthy!), for my 10 I clock snack I had carrot with houmous. Lunch was a spinach, watercress and rocket salad, with beetroot,Chicken, cucumber, pine nuts, tomatoes and a olive oil and squeezed lemon as a dressing. I had half of that for my 12 o clock lunch, with a protein shake and a spoon on cashew nut butter (which is totally spectacularly amazing!), then the same again at 3pm just a smaller portion. At 5 o clock I then had two bananas before I got to the gym and I’m not to sure if i will have anything when I get in. We will see.

I also have an announcement! I have another interclub coming up in 3 weeks! It is down in Leeds at a gym called The Bad Company Gym! It is a highly respected gym in the area, there have been some very good fighters come out of the gym! There are two that spring to mind, one being Yokkao world title contender Liam Harrison! And also the Yokkao world champion Jordan Watson! I am so pumped for it! It should be a wicked experience going down and seeing things down there!

The training tonight was a wicked session! We managed to get a decent amount of sparring in, which is totally wicked. I love a bit of sparring. At first, we was drilling with one attack, it could have been any attack, punch, kick, knee, anything. We did this one for one. Making sure we were using our fakes and feints, taking as long as we needed to ensure that the strike would land. After that it was one of my favourite sentences within the gym… “Gum shields in!”

We then began the 20 minute sparring session. It’s funny, because I remember when I first started doing Muay Thai, when we were doing sparring I was so tense! It tired me out so quickly, I got so gassed that I just couldn’t go on and I began to psych myself out telling myself “I’m not going to be able to do this,” or “I can’t keep on going!”

What I realised this weekend is that I was a lot more relaxed. So much so that I was trying to think about each strike I was doing. Granted this was a sparring session with a group of my friends and training partners, it might be a little different with a stranger in a different city. Every time I go into the gym I learn something different. Take something new from the experience!

I listened to a podcast this morning by Sean Fagan with a guy who was talking all about the spiritual side of training and about how becoming a yoga instructor helped him with his training and becoming a trainer. I love listening to that sort of stuff, learning about how quieting your mind to a place where you can think about what you are doing, learn from your mistakes and in turn become a better person, or Muay Thai fighter!

Granted I am a long way off from becoming a fighter but it is one of my longer term goals of training. Having at least one fight and I will feel as though I have achieved something I never thought I could! To be fair, Muay Thai has opened up so many things for me, this blog, the people, Twitter, facebook, training, events… All things I never thought or seen myself doing even this time a year ago.

Not to get all nostalgic and soppy on you all, I’m just very thankful for the opportunity to be able to be here, do the things I do. In time, hopefully it will become something more.

I felt totally exposed today!!

It has been an interesting experience today. I got my body fat measured using the Poliquin Bio-Signature. I have entered a competition with the gym I go to called “NK Biggest Fattest loser.” Now as you all know, I am on a mission to get some of this excess weight shifted.

What better way to do it than take part in a fat losing competition among my peers! So basically, the way that it works is that we get the percentage of our body fat taken today. This is done using the Poliquin Bio-Signature method using callipers. I was totally dreading it, I only took it upon myself to do some research on what it actually was that we were doing and safe to say… I shit my pants!!

The other night me and my wife decided to take ourselves off and go on an adventure somewhere, just go to the train station and pick somewhere off the board. You are probably wondering why I am telling you this. Well we were running around this morning packing stuff up in the bag for the overnight stay in wherever we were going to go. Which meant that I forgot to pack some bloody shorts!!

Now when I got on the train to Newcastle to get to the gym, Amy (my wife) asked me, “Dom, did you not pack any shorts? How you going to get your reading taken?” Instant panic set in!! My brain went into overdrive thinking shit shit shit!! I was totally thinking that my body fat was going to be above 30% but when it came to the crunch, I was quite happy with the reading that came out!!

The reading itself was an interesting experience. Kat, who took the all the measurements was awesome, she was really informative and stuff and gave us good feedback and told us what we should be working on. So when I was getting my readings taken, without bloody shorts on she had to get to my knees, my quads and thighs… It was, try and shimmy my jeans up far enough or just drop them… I came to the conclusion that I would probably look like less of a knob if I just stripped down.

So picture this, I was stood there, no top on, my jeans round my ankles and Kat was there with the callipers inspecting every jiggly bit of my body. I felt totally on show!! I have never felt so exposed in my entire life, granted it was only me and Kat in the changing rooms but I can safely say, I will be taking shirts next time!!

So the reading itself came out to be 25% body fat, which means, of the 96.5kg that I am, 72.5kg of that is lean mass. The areas that require the most attention are my pectorals, umbilicals and my quadriceps. What Kat told me is that I need to eat more often. Which I know is right, try to keep my metabolism up throughout the day. That should keep my fat loss active if I keep drinking the right amounts of water and stuff obviously pair that with the exercise that will be done in and out of the gym. I am going to start running again to up my cardio and endurance and be in the gym 4 time a week.

We should hopefully get a reading again in a few weeks time which would be a pretty cool help, get a midway reading so we know what progress we have made and where we still need to work on. I hope I begin to see some changes within my composition which I am sure I will but it is all a work in progress. All working towards one goal… Being able to get in the ring and punch someone in the face!

I am excited for this year, there is a lot of promising things that I am expecting out of 2015! This is it for now, I have rambled on enough for today, I will be back in the gym on Monday! So I will have another blog post up for you on Monday night.

Sleep IS important!!

I didn’t appreciate the healing power of sleep until last night! Being the first week back at training this week it has been pretty hard going so far! Enjoyable but hard going! The Strength and Conditioning class has now moved to a Monday, which is good because it means that between Monday and Thursday there is a bit of rest and also that it gives us opportunity for another class which happens to be a Clinch class!

So i was in the gym on Monday and Tuesday, now after Monday I could barely walk. To say I could barely walk would actually be an understatement! I was so stiff it was unreal! I thought that I would power through Tuesday and hope for it to get better. Which I did, power through I mean, as for getting better. Not a bloody chance! The amount of squats we did on Monday totally did me in!

After the gym on Tuesday I was feeling pretty good actually, while I was still warm… The more I cooled down after the class the worse the pain got. Now I was hoping to get to the gym on Wednesday, I took my gym bag and started the day with every intention of going, even though I was in a lot of pain. I mean so much so, when I dropped a pen at work, I just left it there because that simple task of picking up a pen became the worlds most difficult task that I didn’t fancy at all!

So after work on Wednesday, I hobbled my way to the station to get the train home. Which I did and all was peaceful. My wife doesn’t finish work until 11pm this week as she is working the late shift, so when i got in, did the normal thing, get a shower, get food and then get on the sofa, I was on the sofa for about an hour and I looked at the clock on my laptop and it read “9:00pm” I thought to myself “is it too early to go to bed?”

Now, I love my sleep! So much so that at 9pm I decided to hit the hay. I woke up when the wife came in for about 5mins, mumbled something that resembled “hello!” then rolled back over to sleep. It was possibly one of the best nights sleep I had had in a very long time. I don’t know what it was that made me sleep so well last night but it was great!

I woke up this morning feeling all kinds of refreshed and definitely ready to get back into the gym! I was still a little sore but it didn’t have a patch on how I felt the day before, which was fantastic!! So I had a good day at work, pretty standard really, throughout the day all I had been thinking about is getting to the gym. Does anyone else do that? When doing something Muay Thai pops onto the mind and you begin top envisage doing a flying knee into a customers face, or teeping them straight in the teeth.

I do often wonder what my life would be like if I hadn’t discovered Muay Thai and the Northern Kings Gym in Newcastle. I guess it would be the same as life was before I met my wife, mundane and boring but when I met her it totally changed my mindset and perception on what was important, which is exactly what Muay Thai has done for me!

It has definitely become my second wife and is definitely one third of my soul mate! Which makes doing this blog and documenting my Muay Thai experience every bit more enjoyable! Which in fact brings me onto my next point. Training tonight.

It was a good session, it was a beginners class and we had a few newbies in so it got stripped right back to basics, which honestly, I absolutely love doing. There is a quote that I have seen somewhere on the internet which I think is very fitting, I’m in now way taking and credit for the quote but I can’t remember where it originated but it went a little something like this…

“I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times” – which I soon found out was Bruce Lee when I googled it to confirm I was writing it correctly.

I think this is very very true, which is why I think I enjoy the stripped back classes as much as I do, you get time to practice all techniques. We starting with a jab, back leg kick. We drilled that with our partners for 3mins, switched and then for the second round did it again for another 3mins. For the third round we did the jab then the teep, again 3mins and switched and did another three rounds.

After that we worked on countering the attack, so for the leg kick we worked on catching the kick, we didn’t go onto the next step from that just went to there, we drilled that for 3mins then after that we worked on either catching the teep or taking a step back and getting out of the way of the teep.

So all in all it was a pretty basic session but we got to thrash it on some pads for the best part of 45mins which is always good fun! The one thing I would like to do a little more of is sparring, I am thinking of asking a couple of the lads if they would like to kick about after the class has finished and have a few rounds of sparring after one or two sessions in the week. Which would be pretty fun!

So that’s it for today really. Feeling much better now after the long sleep yesterday and felt pretty good in the gym today which is always a good feeling. I am going to have to start running again to help shift this weight that I have hanging over me at the moment but other than that, I think in a few weeks time after I have been to a few more sessions I will be back feeling to what I was before I took the time off.

The beginning of “Mission Lodge”

I don’t even really know where to start with this one really… it was the first session back training today and mission lodge has officially began!

There is a story behind mission lodge so I will explain as it will become something of a focus of mine over the course of the next few months. in about October/November time I had acquired the nickname ‘Podge’ because of my big bones and thick set. basically, I’m fat ha ha.

Something I embrace and hold my hands up to. Something I have wrote about in previous blogs, I am sure! So whenever I needed motivating when doing a session with Craig he would always play the Podge card…

“C’mon Podge” he would say “Can’t slack now Podge!”

It did actually work, so Podge was my name… towards the end of the year I was commenting on something via Facebook or some other social media site and I had made a typo… I can’t remember it word for word but it mentioned Lodge instead of Podge.

So by Lodge it means lean podge, Lodge! I love it ha ha! So now that the new year is here and I am on a mission to get the excess weight shifted so I can begin to compete! So “Mission Lodge” has began!

All the lads now are in a position where they are getting fights lined up and a little bit of me is quite jealous because it is something that I really want to be able to do.

To be honest I aren’t in any rush to do so, I want to be ready both mentally and physically. Which I am sure I will be in time. What I keep reminding myself is, I have only been training for 8 months so not long at all really! Muay Thai has quickly become a massive part of my life!

Training tonight! Wow! To say it hurts would be a fucking massive understatement! I haven’t really trained properly since the end of November so it has been like a full month since I’ve had to really push myself! I have ate awfully, not exercised at all and just generally been quite lazy which is why the blog kind of took a back seat too and i am now weighing in at 97kg!

The training session though, we had two sessions tonight, strength and conditioning and also a Thai/K1 class. The S&C was more of a technique based class working on technique on basic exercises like goblet squats, press ups, dislocates, pull a parts, wall squats etc but it was still really challenging! We did 10 sets of three exercises, goblet squat, push up and jumping lunges but each set would decrease in a number it went 10, 9, 8, 7, 6 and so on and so on with no rest.

Because it was the first session back it was really busy! One of the lads said give it a few weeks, there will only be 5 or 6 of us here, which is true, everyone is on a buzz at the moment to get back into training and i am sure it will soon pass for some but for me it will only kick into a higher gear!

After S&C it was the Thai/K1 session which I have been looking forward to! Since the first 10mins of the S&C sessions beginning I soon became very apprehensive because I was totally knackered but I managed to power through!

In the session we started on working on the overhand right as a slip from a jab! So we paired up, and got working on slipping the jab and returning with the overhand right then the left body as the first drill, then it was taking a step back then returning with the overhand and the left body again. After that we added kicks in.

So as our partner would jab we would do a right body kick followed by a left hook to the head. We drilled that for a few rounds and then went on to spar what it was that we had covered in the class. So we did one for one, but would mix it up by doing either the slip overhand right, left body shot or the right kick and then the left hook to the head.

We did that for about 15mins changing every 3mins. As an added extra we had to add a boxing combination on the end of whatever we did to put the K1 spin on it. It wasn’t to hurt our partner but to show that the work rate was up.

In the final 15mins of the classes the dreaded word got called out by Craig. “FITNESS!!!!” Uh oh!! Fitness!

So for this we had to do 20 squats, 20 squat jumps and 20 seconds isometric squat hold. Absolutely bloody horrendous! I was one of the last ones to finish but I was proud of the fact that I didn’t skip anything or didn’t miss any out. I made a point of following everything I was given through to the end!!

It felt good to be back in the gym! I am looking forward to being back in a good routine and getting into some sort of fit shape!

Today has been a productive day for MTBUK

Hey Everyone,

I hope everyone has a good time over the Christmas period. Now that the festive celebrations have come to an end it is time to get things kick started.

I know I haven’t really posted recently and I apologise for that. I have had a various amount of things happening recently which means my Muay Thai journey has taken a back seat.

Now that the new year is here and I am pumped and ready to get back into my Muay Thai training I am so excited to get MTBUK back up and running and get the ideas in full swing.

I have been doing a few things behind closed doors, getting lined up to get all up in your grill when the time is right. The one thing that I will share with you though is the new logo that I have been working on. It is something that has evolved over a period of time to what it is now.

I am quite proud of it if I am honest and it might still change again in the future as the blog and the different areas of social media that I use change and evolve it might be that the logo changes too.

Today’s Interclub was ace!!!

Yo yo!!! It’s Dom here from MTBUK!

Hows it going? Today’s interclub was totally amazing! It was such a wicked experience I don’t really have words to describe how it felt being in the ring but I will give it a shot!

First martin was on, he did so well. When i first began sparring, I did a few rounds with him and he was quite heavy handed, which was quite the eye opener for me! He did well in his round though! It was good that it was non-competative, that kind of put my mind at ease really. He was the first of us to go up out of the group of people that went with us from Northern Kings.

I was second to go up. I thought I had longer than I did but I had just got changed and finished wrapping my hands and then my name was called. they must have had a shuffle of the running sequence. Either way, I think it was a good thing because i didn’t really have time to psych myself out. I was totally nervous, I had been up and down all night last night because I was thinking about it quite a lot. When I got in the ring it kind of felt natural. All of the nerves went away and the adrenaline kicked in! Everything else in the room disappeared and all I could think about it was what was in front of me.

I think I did pretty well to say it was my first experience in the ring. It started quite slow, the guy who I was sparring with was a little taller than me and had a really mean old teep! Using both his back leg and his front leg. I got a little video that my wife recorded but she was quite far away and didn’t turn the phone on the side so it isn’t fantastic quality. By the end of the rounds we were going quite heavily. It wasn’t full 3 minute rounds, we did five 1 minute rounds which was just right for me and the level i am at currently.

I took a few heavy shots but I like to think I gave a few back. I managed to somewhat use my kicks to my advantage. I do have a lot to learn, that is a fact. Mainly on my defences!

The other lads did so well too! I was a proud team mate! I have got some videos that I am currently uploading to YouTube so I will put the link into my next blog when I manage to get them up because they are taking an absolute lifetime to do so!

The other lads utilised other skills needed in Muay Thai, some of the lads used the clinch a bit more whereas I was quite distant and used boxing and kicking. Andrew in particular was good in the clinch! That was good to watch. I guess a big part of getting in the ring is listening to your corner, it’s hard when you are concentrating so much on what you are doing and what your opponent is doing.

I love it! There really isn’t a feeling like it. Like I said, I will post the videos on here so you can see them all, let me know what you think of them :).

Finally I just want to let you know, the blog has had a lot of views and attention over the past 48 hours. I have doubled my views and subscribers. I have now made a YouTube channel to which I am uploading the videos, and the Twitter and Facebook I am using now too! Something crazy happened last night too! The Muay Thai equipment provider Sandee wrote to me on twitter and asked me if I might like to, one some point, like to write a guest blog post for them! WHAT!!! SANDEE, asking ME to write a post for them! I was totally Flabbergasted (love that word)!! Here is a link to their website, have a look at the stuff they can do for you, they stock all sorts of things you would need in your Muay Thai journey from gloves, shin pads, thai pads, bags, wraps you name it!! All very high quality products, all the items I use are made by Sandee.
